Features: Uncommon First Edition. To many, this novel marks the beginning of the "Oriental Menace" theme in fiction. "The Yellow Danger" was released in 1898 as an expanded version of Sheil's "The Empress of the Earth," which was serialized in "Short Stories" (5 Feb - 18 June 1989) by Pearson. Based on the serial's popularity, the publisher continued to capitalize on the xenophobic stress following the Opium Wars, with the release of this novel. In the novel and stories, Shiel introduces the villain Dr. Yen How, who is today considered the basis for Sax Rohmer's problematic, but nonetheless iconic Fu Machu (1912).
