"One of the amusing side products of the golf craze of the turn of the century was a small body of fiction dealing with golf. Major Gore, the narrator, is a fortune-hunting sportman. He observes that the American heiress in whom he is interested admires Lindsay, the golf champion. Since Gore is very good at sports, he is rash enough to believe that he can learn to play championship golf in a week. He challenges Lindsay to a match, but he soon learns that he has been foolish. He is about to face defeat when the ghost of Cardinal Smeaton, a notorious figure from the Scottish renaissance, offers to help him" (Bleiler).
