They are small, furred, sexless creatures who communicate telepathically and mostly live peacefully. And there are other species of both plants and animals that are extremely violent. The Dwellers, the dominant species, live underground. The novel is concerned with a conflict between the Amphibians and the Dwellers, and how it is settled.
