Description: |
This great cover by Clem Gretta was a source of much confusion a decade later when it was re-published as the cover for the January 1942 issue Weird Tales. That issue included a lead story by Lovecraft's "Shadow Over Innsmouth," published for the first time in a magazine. For many years afterwards, fans of Lovecraft and Weird Tales tried to figure out who the cover artist was for that issue, and which story the cover illustrated, guessing the art had something to do with the Lovecraft story but without any clear understanding of how it related.
The biggest Weird Tales cover mystery ultimately unraveled when it was revealed many years later that the publishers had another cover in mind that better connected with the issue, but whomever was commissioned to do the cover did not deliver the piece in time, or perhaps the art was not up to the magazine's standards. Without a cover and needing to go to press, they took a cover painting from the Short Stories warehouse, this 1932 Gretta over (the man who bought Weird Tales in 1940 had bought Short Stories years before), decided it was a weird enough cover for the Weird Tales issue, and used it without explanation to anyone. |
