Original 2-page contract with A. C. McClurg & Co. Publishers, 1922.
The original two-page contract between Burroughs and his publisher, A. C. McClurg & Co. for the publishing of the first edition of THE CHESSMEN OF MARS, SIGNED IN FULL BY BURROUGH.
At top of first page is written in ink, "Cancelled and rights tr. to Edgar Rice Burroughs Inc. August 11, 1939 - 50.00." S. September 6, 1922. Burroughs bought back the copyright in 1939 for the bargain price of $50.
Also included is the agreement between McClurg and Grosset & Dunlap for the "so-called Popular Edition" reprint of the book, November 1st, 1923 (attached to the back of the frame).
And, a Letter of Provenance from Barry R. Levin Science Fiction and Fantasy Literature, dated 10/24/03. (attached to the back of the frame).
The two-page Burroughs and McClurg contract, and the photograph by Johnny Corbin, are beautifully framed together with a three-window (opening) black mat with white core and burgundy fillet with white core, under glass, with black-and-burgundy wood frame.
Frame measures: 18.5 x 35.75 inches. Window for photograph measures 8 1/2 x 6 5/8 inches, windows for contract pages each measure 7 3/4 x 10 1/2 inches.
A little creasing to the paper otherwise fine in fine frame.
A handsome display item and an important piece of Science Fiction history.
